A local SEO checklist for Columbus small businesses

Review accurate business details, real service areas, and useful local pages for Columbus and Central Ohio without promising rankings.

This is a practical checklist, not an audit: it does not inspect a particular business profile, website, ranking, or review. Treat each item as a recommendation and confirm it against your own current business information before marking it complete.

Check the business details customers will see

Compare your public business name, hours, contact path, and location details with the way the business actually operates. Google’s Business Profile guidance says to represent the business accurately and keep its address or service area precise. Do not add a location where customers are not served.

If you travel to customers rather than receiving them at your address, review Google’s service-area guidance before displaying a street address. Choose areas you genuinely serve and keep the description understandable to a customer who is deciding whether to contact you.

Make each local page useful on its own

For each real service, explain what is included, who it fits, where it is available, and how a customer can ask a question. Add Columbus or another Central Ohio place name only where it accurately describes the service area or the work described on that page.

Avoid making a stack of near-identical pages by swapping only the city name. If two service areas need separate pages, give each page its own useful details, such as a real service boundary, operating information, or customer question that applies there.

Separate completed checks from open questions

Review the public page on a phone, follow its contact link, and compare the displayed details with the current source information your business controls. Record the date and mark each item as confirmed, needs review, or not applicable.

Google documents LocalBusiness structured data as a way to describe business information to Search. Treat accurate visible page content as the source for any structured data, and do not add ratings, reviews, service areas, or results that you cannot substantiate. This checklist does not verify indexing or predict a search position.

A short working checklist

  • Confirm the public business name and contact details against current operating information.
  • Use an accurate customer-facing address or a real service-area description.
  • Describe only services and locations the business actually offers.
  • Make each service-area page useful beyond a changed city name.
  • Follow the page’s contact path on a phone.
  • Mark review notes as confirmed, needs review, or not applicable.
